Update Opera Mini to latest version from pre installed old version in your mobile

You have the China Mobile or else with pre installed Opera Mini browser. The pre installed version may be Opera Mini 3 or 4.

Now you wish to update to the latest version of Opera Mini 5.1

But your mobile won't allow you to update or delete the default browser.

There is a way to update to the latest version but still you can't delete the old pre installed version.

Opera distributes all the versions of Opera mini 3/4/5 in the name 'Opera mini' If you try to install the latest version your mobile recognise it as Opera mini only. So you have to change the name as OM5 / OM5.1, in the browser itself. Then only your mobile accept it as some other browser.

Now get ready for a small tweak and hack your mobile!

1. Download the JAR file from the Opera site

2. A JAR file is an archive. So, extract the JAR file (using WinRAR) and rename the folder as OM5 or OM5.1

3. Open the folder, there would be another folder named META-INF.

4. Open the folder. There would be a MF file in the folder named MANIFEST.

5. Open the file with Notepad. This file contains the information about the file.

6. Check the line MIDlet-Name: Opera Mini. Rename 'Opera Mini', as OM5 (or OM5.1) After the rename the line should look like this. MIDlet-Name: OM5
7. Save the file.

8. Go back to OM5 folder. Now, select all the files in that folder. Then, using WinRAR or WinZIP, add the files to an archive, and name the archive as OM5.jar (Don't forget to add .jar extension. Also, while creating archive, make sure you select the ZIP option in WinRAR)

9. Transfer the file to your phone. Install the app, it will get installed as OM5.

10. Thats all!
